Desire 2 Learn (D2L) -vs- Canvas
Adding Elements
Desire 2 Learn- Adding a Module
Once you have the course shell set up in D2L, adding course content tends to be a little bit easier because you are more familiar with navigating the system. To add a module, you must click on Content > Add a Module (under Table of Contents) > Type the name of module and hit enter.

Desire 2 Learn- Adding a File
Adding a file is relatively easy. You must first click on the module in which you want the file to appear. For example, to add a document, PowerPoint, or PDF you must click on New > Upload Files > Choose the file and click on Add. If you have files already uploaded to D2L, you can add a file using Manage Files.

Creating a file is a similar process in that you click on Create a File > Enter a Title > Embed the Code > Click Publish.
To create a file such as a YouTube video, you must first go to the YouTube video you want to use and click Share > Embed > Under the code click on More > Uncheck Show Suggested Videos so that way once the video ends it will not cue up another video. Copy the code and past that into the section notated in the above picture and click Publish.
Canvas- Adding a Module
Adding a module is called adding a Page in Canvas. Click on Pages located on the left in the menu. Once you create a home or welcome page click + Page > Give the page a title.

Canvas- Adding Files
Adding content to your course in Canvas is a bit more tricky than with D2L. Tutorials can be helpful but it is still a matter of trial and error. To add a file you should click on Files in the menu on the left, then click on Add Files and choose the file you wish to upload. The pencil icon will allow you to edit the name of the document and make any other changes. To the left of the file name you will see the type of file that was upload, in this case it is a Word document. You follow the same steps to add PowerPoints and PDFs.

Recommendation
Canvas was much easier to set up the course shell. However, adding files and especially videos and links was much more time consuming and tedious. Desire 2 Learn was very cut and dry when it came to adding specific elements, as it offered menu options for each element and walk you through step by step. Both Canvas and D2L provide tutorials but in Canvas you need to know that you don't add "content" per se, but instead you create pages and add the content from there. I would recommend D2L when it comes to developing the course because it is much more direct with what you are trying to accomplish.
