What is Digital Etiquette?
Digital etiquette is defined as The electronic standards of conduct or procedure (Ribble, 2015). Digital etiquette is a somewhat new concept for those using technology. Normally, parents and families teach children the basic etiquette but with new technology comes new rules of etiquette (Ribble, 2015).
Concerns Over Digital Etiquette
Adults are role models for kids and when kids see adults using technologies inappropriately, they assume it is acceptable and act accordingly. This becomes a vicious cycle which needs to be broken before more technologies come along and make the process more difficult (Ribble, 2015).
Using Digital Etiquette Appropriately
To be a good digital citizen, people can evaluate their own technology use, as well as use by others. Getting feedback from teachers and peers about how they are using technology will allow them to make adjustments. Ribble states that the two major considerations with technology and children are character education and empathy (2015). Students need to be taught that what is said or shared on-line will affect themselves and others off-line. They must be respectful of others and refrain from cyber-bullying, flaming (hostile interaction between internet users) and instigative language.
