Desire 2 Learn (D2L) -vs- Canvas
Course Setup & Online Communication
Desire 2 Learn (D2L)
D2L can be challenging if you are not familiar with navigating the system. D2L does offer tutorials on their website and users can also find tutorials on YouTube.com. The process is much easier if your institution uses D2L because a shell is automatically created for every course that is taught. Some institutions have D2L integrated into their student information system so they automatically enroll students through an automatic information system.

Canvas
Canvas is much more user-friendly when creating a course and using the tools to build the course. Canvas offers a checklist when building a course and it will walk you through step-by-step. The big difference I found is that Canvas requires email addresses for those you want to add to the course unless they have an existing Canvas account. A student must accept your email invitation to join the course and will be marked as "pending" until they do so.. Some institutions do not allow users to manually add students, so they will automatically enroll students through an automatic information system just as they do in L2D.

Recommendation
In terms of setting up a course and adding course information, I found Canvas to be much more user friendly for those who are new to learning management systems. Canvas offers step by step instructions in the form of a checklist on the left side of the home page. Once one topic is complete the menu automatically advances you to the next. Canvas also allows for easy attachment of links and files in the course. The homepage enables you to choose what you want to be displayed in terms of modules, assignments, syllabi, etc.
